In order to evaluate the effect of new packaging film and tray materials on the postharvest quality of strawberries, the CTIFL conducted experiments in a simulated post-harvest supply chain in 2019. Four films and twelve types of trays, all made of totally or partially bio-based materials, were tested on maintaining the quality of the strawberries as well as their robustness and resistance. The results show that films that are more water-permeable than plastic reduce the formation of condensation, while allowing the development of modified atmosphere conditions and potentially extending the shelf-life of strawberries on display. Some trays also showed good performance in terms of maintaining fruit quality as well as robustness compared to conventional PET materials. This article presents a summary of the most significant results.
