The domestic production of fruits and vegetables amounts to 4.9 million tonnes for vegetables and 2.1 million tonnes for fruits which is lower than in 2000. The leading products are still apples, tomatoes, carrots, onions, cabbages and salads. These products are at the top of French exports inside and outside the EU. But the faster increase in intra- and extra-EU imports is accompanied by a steady increase in the structural deficit of the French trade balance. On the domestic market, the increase in imports, beyond citrus and exotic fruits, accompanies a downward trend in the self-supply rate (share of domestic supply), although since 2017 the latter seems to have stabilized at around 51%.
